A collection of the earliest John Constantine: Helllblazer stories about a shabby Liverpudlian chain-smoking, hard drinking, womanising gumshoe who takes on Supernatural enemies, including cult leaders, demons and devils. There is a gritty realism to these very dark tales, child trafficking, hard drugs, Constantine taking down racists, and criticisms of Thatcher’s Britain abound. Constantine is often haunted (literally and figuratively) by the spirits of those he failed to save.
The original 1987 collection of his solo adventures was revised in 2011 to add the actual origin stories when Constantine appeared in Swamp Thing stories, caught in a bizarre love triangle with Swampy possessing his body to engage in relationships. These seem confusing at times while is direct tales are stark noirish nightmares on a knife-edge between life, death and Hell.
